Greetings
1965

Photomontage; originally, collage on Masonate sheet
4 x 8 feet

This early montage work relies on a packed horror vacui aesthetic that differentiates them from later works. Greetings assembles myriad newspaper and magazine images of President Lyndon Johnson and other United States politicians meeting and conferring with world leaders, nearly all men. The piece was made the year of Johnson's escalation of American military involvement in the Vietnam War and suggests the underlying network of relationships with known and anonymous technocrats that brought about that catastrophic decision.
