Transitions & Digressions
1981–present

This color photograph series examines the styling of clothing and wares in storefront displays and their attendant codes and symbols of consumerism. The overall focus is on mannequins, the ways in which bodies—female bodies in particular—become fragmented in order to sell goods. As in Rosler’s other photographic work, the familiar experience of navigating the city is given critical weight, and the banalities of a daily commute acquire lyrical colors and romantic light and shadow.
