Black Auto Workers Organizing Detroit, DRUM

Indoor billboard made for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit
This work was commissioned to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals. Rosler chose to represent a pivotal moment in the history of workplace struggles in the Detroit auto industry. The billboard includes flyers, photographs, and documents of DRUM. The Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement, an organization of African American auto workers in Detroit, was formed in 1968 to agitate for reforms and against racism in the industry. The group spurred the formation of other groups at nearby plants, and in 1969 the groups came together as the short-lived League of Revolutionary Black Workers.
