House Beautiful: The Colonies
1969–72

This suite of five photomontages, related to House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home, slyly projects the idea of United States territorial expansion into space. Images of traffic jams on the moon and cities in smog behind the astronaut planting a U.S. flag, or a polished suburban interior looking out onto multiple luxury bathrooms, draw a connection between U.S. military interventionism and the Space Race as well as a repetitive smallness of vision.
