Turnstile & Dance Dance Revolution
Both 2008
Metal and wood; arcade game with music
This pair of works, Turnstile and Dance Dance Revolution, placed at either the entrance or exit of an exhibition, makes visitors confront a decision-making exercise: pay a dollar to play the Japanese arcade game Dance Dance Revolution, or pay a quarter to go through the turnstile and view (or leave) the show. These options reflect a tension between passive escapism and the full acknowledgment of the machinations and consequences of institutional systems—markets, military adventures, cultural and electoral politics.
